Interesting views on Alts. I have three - a minstrel cook, a guardian armourer and a lore master scholar. That way, if I can’t get the trade skills from a friend, I can do it myself.
The downside is that my gold is spread around and it costs money to level the trades, so I need to balance cash against non-monetary benefits. Often the “cost” is in not being able to sell stuff that my alts need, rather than making the gold for it.
Levelling tiers isn’t too hard, as I have a friend who does the same as me and one of us uses our main to assist the other’s alt (though getting to tier 3 in cooking is hard at level 13!)
One tip - if you’re thinking of having a bank alt to sell stuff on the Auction House (why else are there mailboxes in there if not for that?), make them a scholar. Scholar seems to be the hardest trade to by wandering around the map, so make them the bank alt, then your other characters can send all the scholar stuff that they collect from drops to them (particularly dye ingredients).
That way, they can make dye and scrolls and sell them for good profits, in addition to all the other junk you’re trying to get rid of.
